LEROY JENKINS (March 11, 1932 - February 24, 2007) forged a singular path in free improvisation on the violin and viola that is the 20th century standard. His works range from solo pieces to opera and orchestral scores. Jenkins' vision accepted no limits. Projecting the rich African American heritage through a prism of European classical techniques and world music traditions, he redefined all in a space of his own creation. Jazzbows Music is honored to offer compositions by the legendary master improviser and composer.
SONELIUS SMITH is a brilliant pianist, composer, creative musician, and highly regarded teacher. He composed several classics for jazz strings recorded by Quartette Indigo. His original works are proven winners that will become mainstays of the jazz string repertoire. Sonelius has performed, composed and recorded for such noted jazz legends as Lionel Hampton, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, David Murray, and Shamek Farrah. STEVE TURRE has consistently won Readers and Critics polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazzizmagazines for Best Trombone and Best Misc. Instrumentalist (sea shells). A recognized jazz master, Steve often features jazz strings in his bands, including his wife, cellist Akua Dixon. His classic 1988 album Fire & Icefeatures Akua's Quartette Indigo. One of Steve's finest compositions for strings, Andromeda (named for Steve & Akua's daughter), is heard on that album, and on Quartette Indigo's first album, Quartette Indigo.
