The Neo Bass Ensemble

Lisle Atkinson's Neo Bass Ensemble

Founded 1983

Original Members:
Bass - Lisle Atkinson, Karen Atkinson, Phillip Wadkins, Darnell Jay Starkes, Paul West
Drums - Al Harewood, Piano - Dennis Moorman, Vocals - Marsha Perry Starkes & Andy Bey

The NEO BASS ENSEMBLE was founded in 1983 by world renowned bassist Lisle Atkinson, to focus attention on the limitless possibilities of the string bass to produce melody, harmony and rhythm.  Mr. Atkinson is lead bassist of the ensemble.  Inspired by the knowledge that the double bass can do lyrically what any other instrument can do, Mr. Atkinson utilizes the ensemble to demonstrate the range and virtuosity of the bass as lead instrument, harmonic front line, solo and rhythm section component of the group.

Since it's inception, the NEO BASS ENSEMBLE has gone through several metamorphoses and many great supporting players, including Jamil Nasser (bass), Akua Dixon (cello) , Newman Baker (drums) & others.   The current ensemble is comprised of six basses, two vocalists, one cello, piano and drums.

The superb artistry of the members of the NEO BASS ENSEMBLE puts the full spectrum of the double bass on display.
The ensemble has performed at Symphony Space, Merkin Hall, Manhattan Center, The Hartford Connecticut Jazz Festival and The Lake George Jazz Festival.

Yo
u may experience the unique sound of the NEO BASS ENSEMBLE on its first CD, “Bird Lives,” which is dedicated to the music of the great Charlie Parker, and on two subsequent albums," Hit IT" and "Bebop Meets Bass," available on CD baby.
