The Neo Bass Ensemble

Lisle Atkinson's Neo Bass Ensemble

Founded 1983

Original Members:
Bass - Lisle Atkinson, Karen Atkinson, Phillip Wadkins, Darnell Jay Starkes, Paul West
Drums - Al Harewood, Piano - Dennis Moorman, Vocals - Marsha Perry Starkes & Andy Bey

The NEO BASS ENSEMBLE was founded in 1983 by world renowned bassist Lisle Atkinson to focus attention on the limitless possibilities of the string bass to produce melody, harmony and rhythm.  Mr. Atkinson is lead bassist of the ensemble.

Inspired by the knowledge that the bass can do lyrically what any other instrument does, Mr. Atkinson uses the ensemble to skillfully demonstrate the virtuosity of the bass as part of the rhythm section and as a lyrical instrument at the same time.  The ensemble is composed of four basses, two voices, and a rhythm section of bass, piano and drums.

The superb artistry of the members of the Neo Bass Ensemble puts the full spectrum of the bass on display.  Testimony of this is evidenced by the ensemble’s first album, “Bird Lives,” dedicated to the music of the great Charlie Parker, and its second album, “Bebop Meets Bass,” available at CDBaby.
